About Moorcroft Pottery

William Moorcroft began his career in 1897 as a designer for the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer James Macintyre & Co and quickly progressed to head of the companies art pottery studio. He enjoyed great success there, particularly with his first range of pottery called Florian Ware, but in 1912 a decision was made by James Macintyre to close down his art studio. Shortly after this, William moorcroft set up his own company and moved production to a new factory.

The Moorcroft factory produced a range of domestic tableware items, but it was their tubelined, hand painted art pottery that set them apart from other companies and earned them legions of keen collectors, most famously Queen Mary, who granted Moorcroft a royal appointment in 1928 which served to greatly enhance their reputation. In 1945, shortly before the death of William Moorcroft, control of the company passed to his eldest son Walter.

Walter Moorcroft continued to develop the company along with various business partners, before eventually retiring as the Director of Design in 1987. The company continues in business to the present day, although it is no longer under the ownership of the Moorcroft family.
